Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced

FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the traditional Soulsborne formula for its upcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign. Unlike its predecessors, Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a pragmatic one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-centric design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system. This contrasts sharply with the often lengthy play sessions of Elden Ring, where message writing and reading were integral to the experience.

While the signature asynchronous messaging is absent, FromSoftware emphasizes that other asynchronous features will not only be retained but improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for instance, will return, offering players even more insight into other players' deaths and the opportunity to loot fallen opponents' ghosts.

A More Focused, Intense Experience

The removal of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's goal to create a "compressed RPG" for Nightreign. The three-day game structure reflects this ambition for a consistently intense and multiplayer-focused experience with minimal downtime and maximum variety. The aim is to deliver a more streamlined and tightly paced gameplay loop.

Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
