Developers of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era Reveal Details About the Swarm Faction

Unfrozen Studio, the minds behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following its initial teaser. The team delved into the faction's origins, explaining the evolution from the initially conceived "Inferno" to the final, chillingly effective "Swarm," and the broader context within the Jadame continent's narrative.

The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the opposing unit's level; the greater the disparity, the more devastating the attack. Others, like the mantises, boast tactical flexibility, choosing from three distinct abilities each round. A particularly gruesome yet effective strategy involves creatures such as worms and locusts consuming corpses to heal and enhance their power – a skill even heroes can master.

In Olden Era, the insectoid Swarm assumes the mantle of the demonic threat, a race only briefly alluded to in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, Unfrozen Studio infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a mere insect colony into a terrifying cult devoted to a singular, all-powerful ruler. Each member is a component of a vast, interconnected consciousness, existing solely to execute its master's commands.

Gameplay revolves around a unique "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who utilize exclusively Swarm units, as these units synergistically enhance one another. Furthermore, Swarm troops can summon cocoons, their health directly correlated to the army's overall size. The resulting larvae provide temporary reinforcements, adding a dynamic layer to battlefield adaptation.

The Swarm's playstyle is aggressive and centered on direct confrontation. The ability of creatures to consume corpses for healing and empowerment, combined with abilities that shift based on enemy strength, offers players a thrilling and unorthodox combat experience.
