The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC), the world's premier gaming and esports festival, is set to make history by including chess in its tournament lineup. This unprecedented move, born from a collaboration between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), will introduce the ancient game to a new generation of fans.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the ultimate strategy game," expressing excitement about its inclusion. He emphasized chess's global appeal and thriving competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to broaden chess's reach. He stated, "This partnership offers a fantastic opportunity to expand the game's popularity, introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring future players."

Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown

Chess Takes Center Stage

The EWC chess competition will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, boasting a $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will battle for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC's inaugural chess esports event.

To enhance appeal to esports viewers, the CCT will feature a faster-paced format. Matches will use a 10-minute time control without increment, with Armageddon tiebreakers.

With roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, chess has evolved into a globally beloved pastime. Its digital adaptation, facilitated by platforms like Chess.com, has dramatically increased accessibility, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Popular media, including streaming services and shows like "The Queen's Gambit," have further propelled the game's popularity. Its official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and enthusiasts.
