Sony Sends DMCA to Bloodborne 60FPS Patch Creator

Lance McDonald, the creator of the popular Bloodborne 60fps patch, has reported receiving a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The notice demanded the removal of all online links to the patch, which McDonald has complied with. This follows a 2021 release of the patch and a previous encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where McDonald jokingly mentioned his work on the mod to Yoshida, who reportedly laughed at the revelation.

Bloodborne's status as a highly sought-after title remains a significant point of contention among fans. Despite its critical and commercial success on PS4, Sony has yet to release an official next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel, leaving fans yearning for a 60fps experience. Recently, however, advancements in PS4 emulation, specifically via ShadPS4, have allowed for near-remaster quality gameplay at 60fps on PC, a development covered by Digital Foundry. Whether this breakthrough contributed to Sony's DMCA action remains unclear; IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Shuhei Yoshida recently offered his perspective on Bloodborne's continued absence from next-gen platforms in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to the game, coupled with his busy schedule and unwillingness to delegate its potential remastering or updating, might be the reason behind Sony's inaction. Yoshida emphasized this was merely a personal theory and not based on any confidential information.

Despite Bloodborne's inactivity for nearly a decade, a glimmer of hope persists. While Miyazaki often deflects questions about the game, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on modern hardware would be beneficial. The game's future remains uncertain, however, leaving fans to speculate on the possibility of a future update or remaster.
