Palworld's Unexpected Path: Indie Spirit Over AAA Ambition
Pocketpair, the developer behind the wildly successful Palworld, has amassed significant profits – enough to potentially fund a "beyond AAA" title. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has explicitly stated his intention to steer clear of that path. Instead, Pocketpair will focus on its indie roots and giving back to the community that propelled their success.
Mizobe revealed in a recent GameSpark interview that Palworld's sales are in the "tens of billions of yen" – a substantial sum. While this success could easily finance a massive, AAA-scale project, Mizobe believes Pocketpair lacks the organizational structure to handle such an undertaking. He emphasizes that Palworld's development leveraged profits from previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon, but that the current financial windfall represents a different situation entirely.
The decision to avoid the AAA route stems from a belief that the current landscape makes achieving a hit with a large team increasingly challenging. Conversely, the indie scene is thriving, offering improved engines and conditions for global success without the need for massive operations. Mizobe credits the indie community for Pocketpair's growth and expresses a desire to reciprocate that support.
Rather than scaling up, Pocketpair intends to leverage Palworld's success in different ways. Mizobe previously stated that the studio won't be expanding its team or upgrading offices. Instead, the focus will be on diversifying the Palworld IP through expansion into other media. This includes leveraging the recent formation of Palworld Entertainment, a joint venture with Sony, to manage global licensing and merchandising.
Palworld, currently in early access, continues to receive positive feedback and regular updates, including the recent addition of a PvP arena and a new island in the Sakurajima update. This continued dedication to the game, coupled with the strategic diversification of the IP, highlights Pocketpair's commitment to its unique approach to growth within the gaming industry.
