A report by Insider Gaming reveals a complete reboot for the Alaska-set Far Cry extraction shooter, previously codenamed Project Maverick. Initially planned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, internal reviews led Ubisoft to significantly alter development. Despite positive employee and tester feedback, resource allocation shifted primarily to Project Blackbird (Far Cry 7), ultimately killing the multiplayer component as the technical team was reassigned.

Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio specializing in development support, now leads the project. Almost the entire original development team has transitioned to the next Far Cry installment.

According to insider Tom Henderson (mid-December 2024), Far Cry 7 plunges players into a desperate struggle against time. The narrative centers on the protagonist's family, kidnapped by a mysterious cult performing horrifying hallucinogen experiments on animals and children. Players must rescue their loved ones within a 72 in-game hour (24 real-time hour) deadline, making time management a core gameplay mechanic.

A prominent feature is an in-game wristwatch timer, constantly emphasizing the urgency and pressure. This mechanic forces rapid, strategic decision-making, creating a unique experience where every second and choice matters.
