Sony addressed the nearly day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an unspecified "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation of the cause or preventative measures.
To compensate PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony will automatically add five extra days to their subscriptions.
Gamers experienced widespread disruption throughout the outage. Over one-third were unable to log in, while others reported server crashes impacting gameplay.
The outage highlights ongoing player concerns regarding Sony's requirement of a PSN account even for single-player PC games. This policy has drawn criticism from gamers.
While less severe than the major data breach of April 2011 (which caused over 20 days of connectivity problems), the recent PSN downtime has left PS5 users frustrated by Sony's limited communication and lack of transparency.
