Speculation surrounding a Bloodborne remake or sequel has intensified following its prominent feature in PlayStation's 30th-anniversary video. Let's delve into the latest news and the recent PS5 update.
PlayStation's 30th Anniversary: A Fitting Finale
Bloodborne Takes Center Stage
The PlayStation 30th-anniversary trailer concluded with the iconic *Bloodborne*, accompanied by the caption, "It's about persistence." While other PlayStation greats also appeared, the inclusion of *Bloodborne* sparked fervent speculation among fans about a potential remaster or even a sequel.Set to a captivating rendition of The Cranberries' "Dreams," the trailer showcased beloved titles like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Helldivers 2, each with a thematic caption. Final Fantasy VII's "It's about fantasy" and Resident Evil's "It's about fear" exemplify this. However, Bloodborne's placement and caption ignited a wave of excitement and conjecture.
The lack of concrete information hasn't dampened fan enthusiasm. Rumors of a Bloodborne 2 or a 60fps remaster with enhanced visuals have circulated persistently, fueled by this latest development. This isn't the first time such speculation has arisen; a previous Instagram post by PlayStation Italia featuring iconic Bloodborne locations similarly ignited fan fervor.
While the trailer's ending showcases Bloodborne, it could simply acknowledge the game's notorious difficulty, highlighting the persistence required from players, rather than hinting at imminent updates.
PS5 Update: UI Customization Arrives
Sony's 30th-anniversary celebrations extended to a PS5 update, introducing a limited-time PS1 boot-up sequence and customizable themes inspired by past PlayStation consoles. This includes themes spanning the 30th Anniversary and PS1 through PS4, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane for PlayStation fans.
The update allows PS5 owners to personalize their home screen's design and sound effects, drawing from previous console iterations. After downloading, navigate to PS5 Settings, select "PlayStation 30th Anniversary," and then "Appearance and Sound" to customize your home screen.
The update has been well-received, particularly the return of the PS4 user interface. However, its limited-time availability has drawn disappointment, with some expressing a willingness to pay for permanence. Others speculate this could be a test run for broader UI customization options on the PS5 in the future.
Sony's Handheld Console in Development
The speculation doesn't end with the PS5 update. In a recent YouTube video (Dec 2nd), Digital Foundry corroborated Bloomberg's report of Sony developing a handheld console for PS5 games. While still in its early stages, Sony aims to enter the portable gaming market, currently dominated by the Nintendo Switch.
Digital Foundry's John Linneman stated, "We actually heard about this handheld some months ago from a couple of sources specifically…it’s interesting that this finally, sort of, started to make its rounds because it just sort of confirmed what we had seen and heard off the record.”
The panelists suggested that both Microsoft and Sony entering the portable market is a strategic move, given the popularity of smartphone gaming, allowing their handhelds to coexist with mobile devices.
While Microsoft is more open about its handheld ambitions, Sony remains tight-lipped. Despite Digital Foundry's confirmation, the release of both Microsoft's and Sony's handhelds could be years away, requiring the creation of affordable yet graphically superior devices to compete with Nintendo.
Meanwhile, Nintendo appears to be ahead in the portable gaming race. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced on Twitter (X) in May 2024 that more information about the Nintendo Switch's successor would be revealed within the current fiscal year.
