Destiny 2 Username Glitch: Bungie Issues Name Change Tokens

Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This issue, affecting players since approximately August 14th, stemmed from a problem within Bungie's name moderation system.

Bungie's official Twitter (X) account acknowledged the widespread problem: "We're addressing an issue where our name moderation tool incorrectly changed a large number of account names. We're investigating and will provide updates tomorrow, including details about additional name change tokens for all players."

Normally, Bungie's system automatically alters usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this time, numerous players, some with unchanged names since 2015, were affected without cause.

Bungie swiftly launched an investigation, confirming the scale of the problem via multiple tweets. A subsequent update announced the identification and resolution of the underlying server-side issue preventing further accidental name changes.

The developers stated: "The problem causing the mass Bungie Name changes has been identified and fixed on the server-side. We're still planning to distribute name change tokens to everyone later as compensation."

While Bungie continues to resolve the situation, players are advised to remain patient. Those affected can expect future name change tokens and further communication from Bungie.
