DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently revealed that the upcoming film adaptation of The Authority, a brutally effective superhero team from the WildStorm Universe, has been placed on the back burner. This project, initially announced as a significant part of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the DC Universe reboot, has encountered unforeseen challenges.

Gunn cited the project's complexity and the existing landscape of similar superhero content as contributing factors. He specifically mentioned Amazon's The Boys as a significant influence, noting the difficulty in crafting a unique and compelling narrative in a market already saturated with morally ambiguous superhero stories. He also acknowledged the ongoing development of other DCU projects featuring characters they've already begun filming and the desire to ensure these stories intersect effectively.

While The Authority is currently sidelined, other projects within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters are progressing. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has experienced some setbacks, while Booster Gold is progressing well. Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot script currently in development. Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is patiently awaiting the availability of director James Mangold, acknowledging that this project, while beloved, isn't central to the overarching narrative. Its development is independent of the main storyline, stemming from Mangold's initial pitch.

It's worth noting that one character from The Authority, the technologically gifted Angela Spica (The Engineer), is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. The Engineer, known for her self-duplication abilities, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy, is considered one of the team's most powerful members.
