FromSoftware has recently unveiled additional details about their upcoming exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo not only influences the game's style but also brings a unique twist to the design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a more adorable aesthetic.
During the Switch 2 Direct, the trailer concluded with a striking image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, directly engaging the audience. This character, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion for The Duskbloods.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki elaborated on this new character in an interview with Nintendo, stating, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further explained the influence of Nintendo on the game's design, saying, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When asked to clarify what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki added, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)." This marks a departure from the traditional FromSoftware shrine keepers, such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll, who have been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds.
In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the role of the winged rat as a guide remains shrouded in mystery. Miyazaki hinted at the game's innovative approach, saying, "The team at FromSoft has tried its hands at introducing 'a lot of new and interesting ideas,'" suggesting that players should anticipate surprises when The Duskbloods launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
