EA Ditches the Sims 5 Sequel, Embraces Expanding "The Sims Universe"
For years, fans have anticipated The Sims 5. However, EA is dramatically shifting its strategy, moving away from numbered sequels and towards a continuously evolving "Sims Universe." This expansive platform will focus on ongoing updates for The Sims 4, Project Rene, MySims, and The Sims FreePlay.
EA's New Approach: Beyond Numbered Sequels
EA acknowledges the enduring popularity of The Sims 4, noting the significant playtime logged by players in 2024 alone. This new approach, according to EA VP Kate Gorman, will allow for more frequent updates, diverse gameplay, cross-media content, and a wider range of offerings. The Sims 4 will remain a core part of this universe, receiving continued updates and improvements. A dedicated team was even formed to tackle technical issues earlier this year.
EA President Laura Miele reinforced this commitment, stating that The Sims 4 will serve as the foundation for future growth, with ongoing technological updates and new content for years to come.
Expanding the Sims Universe: Creator Kits and Project Rene
EA plans to expand its game offerings through Sims Creator Kits, enabling players to purchase digital content created by the community. Gorman emphasized the importance of community creators, stating that EA is committed to fair compensation for their contributions. The Sims 4 Creator Kits are slated for a November 2024 release.
Project Rene, while not The Sims 5, is a significant new project. Described as a platform for social interaction and collaborative gameplay, Project Rene will feature multiplayer capabilities, a feature largely absent from the franchise since The Sims Online. A limited playtest is planned for this fall.
EA's 25th Anniversary Celebration
EA is also preparing for its 25th anniversary in January 2025 with a special presentation, promising regular updates on the future of the Sims franchise.
The Sims Movie: A Cinematic Expansion
Finally, EA confirmed a film adaptation of The Sims, a collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. Gorman confirmed the film will be deeply rooted in Sims lore, featuring easter eggs and nods to the franchise's history. Margot Robbie's LuckyChap is producing, with Kate Herron directing.
