If a poll asked which pro sports game series fans most want 2K to tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would undoubtedly win. Even MLB and NHL might trail behind. Yet, 2K is instead returning with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's surprisingly enjoyable.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago before partnering with 2K. This experience shines in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive course roster (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is solid. Minor issues like occasional frame rate drops on PC (when surveying holes) are easily overlooked.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty levels adjust the sensitivity, allowing for forgiving or highly realistic gameplay. A simpler "Perfect Swing" option caters to casual players. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee position adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics and the option to laterally adjust tee shots further enhance gameplay. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly helped!MyCareer mode features engaging narrative mechanics. I even had a movie role offered by Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that also affects stats. Skill upgrades are tied to gameplay and wins. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, allowed for reasonable character customization, complete with skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs/groups), promise fun casual gameplay. The inclusion of asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. While this might dampen initial excitement, it points to a solid, enjoyable golf game. A playable demo is available now, allowing you to experience it firsthand.
