"Overwatch 2 Overhaul: Loot Boxes Return, New Perks and Third-Person Mode Introduced"

Author: Owen Apr 09,2025

As we approach 2025, Overwatch 2 is poised for a transformative evolution, promising a slew of changes that will redefine the essence of its gameplay. With nearly a decade since the original Overwatch's debut in 2016, and over two years since Overwatch 2's launch, the game is set to undergo a significant overhaul starting with Season 15 on February 18. This season introduces hero perks, a feature that could shift the meta in unexpected ways.

Blizzard's game director Aaron Keller, along with other team members, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for Overwatch 2. This includes not only new heroes and collaborations but also a complete reimagining of how the game is played. The changes are a response to the competitive pressures from games like NetEase's Marvel Rivals, aiming to rejuvenate interest and excitement in Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 is Adding Hero Perks

A groundbreaking addition to Overwatch 2 is the introduction of hero perks. Each hero will now have the option to select two types of perks during a match: a minor perk at level two, which enhances a basic aspect of the hero, and a major perk that can fundamentally alter the hero's capabilities. For instance, Orisa can choose a minor perk that refunds Heat with critical hits from her primary fire, or a major perk that allows her to replace her Javelin Spin with a Barrier or make her Energy Javelin chargeable, increasing its speed, Knockback, and ability to pierce enemies.

These perks are unlocked progressively throughout a match, offering players the chance to make strategic "gameplay-shifting" decisions, as described by lead gameplay designer Alec Dawson. Choosing one perk means forgoing the other, adding a layer of tactical decision-making reminiscent of Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm talent system.

Stadium: A New Round-Based Mode with Third-Person Perspective

Building on the excitement of hero perks, Season 16, scheduled for April, will introduce Stadium mode, which Aaron Keller describes as the "biggest game mode" since Overwatch's inception. This 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode allows players to earn and spend currency between rounds to enhance their heroes. While perks won't be part of Stadium mode initially, the possibility of their future integration remains open.

Stadium mode also introduces a unique third-person perspective, enabling players to gain a broader view of the battlefield and observe their modifications in action. Players can switch between first and third-person views, adding a new dimension to the gameplay. The mode will launch with a core roster of 14 heroes, with plans for expansion in terms of heroes, maps, and modes.

GOATs are Coming to Overwatch Classic

Blizzard is also exploring other play modes, including the revival of 6v6 and Overwatch Classic. The 6v6 competitive open queue will feature a maximum of two tanks per team, and more events are planned. Midway through Season 16, Overwatch Classic will bring back the "GOATs Meta" from Overwatch 1, featuring the three-tank, three-support composition that once dominated the game. Additionally, seasonal events like April Fools', Summer Games, and Dr. Junkenstein's Halloween event are set to return, enriching the game's calendar.

Freja Arrives in Season 16 - and Aqua Follows

Season 16 will introduce Freja, a new hero from Denmark. As a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter, Freja can shoot explosive bolts and use bolas to capture fleeing enemies. Alongside Freja, concept art for the upcoming hero Aqua was showcased, featuring an ornate staff and water manipulation abilities, hinting at exciting new gameplay mechanics to come later in the year.

Loot Boxes are Back

In a surprising move, Blizzard is reintroducing loot boxes to Overwatch 2. Unlike before, these loot boxes will be earned through free means such as the battle pass's free track and weekly rewards, without any direct purchase option. A key change is the transparency about the contents and odds of loot boxes, ensuring players know what they might receive before opening them. Senior systems designer Gavin Winter emphasizes the balance between fun and transparency in this approach.

Hero Bans, Map Voting, and More are Coming to Competitive Play

Overwatch 2's competitive scene is set to evolve with Season 15's rank reset, introducing new rewards like Galactic weapon skins and special weapon charms to incentivize players. Hero portraits will once again feature rank icons. A significant update in Season 16 will be the introduction of hero bans, a feature common in other competitive games that could shake up the meta. Following this, map voting will be added, giving players more control over their competitive experience.

Cosmetics Galore

Overwatch 2 is set to dazzle with a plethora of new cosmetics. Zenyatta will receive a Mythic skin inspired by the dragon Pixiu in Season 15, accompanied by new skins for Doomfist, Venture, Tracer, Junker Queen, and others. A Mythic weapon skin for Widowmaker is also scheduled for mid-Season 15. Looking further ahead, Juno will sport a magical girl-inspired "Dokiwatch" Mythic skin, and Mythic weapon skins for Mercy and Reaper, along with a Mythic skin for D.Va, are planned.

The game's collaborations continue to expand, with a second partnership with K-pop group LE SSERAFIM planned for March, bringing new in-game skins and cosmetics.

The Competitive Landscape Grows

The competitive scene for Overwatch 2 is expanding significantly, with a new stage in China and an increase in live events, doubling the amount of gameplay and broadcasts. Integration with Face.it leagues and a new tournament system for promotion and relegation are set to enhance the competitive ecosystem. Teams will also have in-game items for fans, with proceeds supporting the organizations directly.
