MultiVersus to Shut Down After Its 5th Season
Fans of the free-to-play fighting game MultiVersus will be disappointed to learn that the game will be shutting down after its upcoming 5th Season. In an official announcement made on January 31, 2025, via the game's Twitter (X) account, it was confirmed that MultiVersus will cease operations on May 30, 2025. This news was further detailed in a blog post on the MultiVersus official website, where Player First Games and Warner Bros. stated that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
MultiVersus Season 5: The Final Chapter
MultiVersus Season 5 is set to commence on February 4, 2025, and will run until the game's closure on May 30, 2025. This last season will introduce two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. According to the official blog post, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
No official statement has been released regarding the reasons behind the decision to shut down MultiVersus.
Continuing MultiVersus in Offline Mode
Following the end of Season 5, MultiVersus will offer an offline mode that allows players to continue enjoying the game locally. This can be done "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To access this feature, players need to download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST until May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to the player's account on PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store. This will enable players to keep playing MultiVersus offline with all their earned and purchased content.
It's worth noting that MultiVersus halted real money transactions on January 31, 2025. This means that Gleamium, the game's premium currency, is no longer purchasable from the online store. However, players can still use any remaining Gleamium to access in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus: From Public Beta to Shutdown
MultiVersus first opened its doors to the public with a beta in July 2022, presenting itself as a free-to-play fighting game akin to Super Smash Bros., but with a unique 2v2 team-based format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open public beta rolled out several updates and two seasons' worth of content. The game experienced a relaunch in May 2024, introducing new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, new currencies, and other enhancements.
Despite these updates, the game struggled with ongoing technical issues, frequent disconnections, and dissatisfaction with its microtransactions. Reports indicated that by July 2024, MultiVersus had seen a significant 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus will officially close its doors on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, with a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
Until its closure on May 30, 2025, MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
