Six years after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight, fans remain eager for its release. Numerous appearances and disappearances at gaming events, and even a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 launch by Microsoft, have only fueled speculation. The absence of any news at The Game Awards further intensified anticipation. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally bring the news?
Fans believe so, and it all started with a cake.
Sharp-eyed members of the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry's co-director, William Pellen, changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He tweeted, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors circulating about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was significant. Nintendo did indeed announce the Switch 2 that day, leaving several questions unanswered about the next-gen console. Did Pellen's tweet hint at this reveal, and if so, why?
This sparked a frenzy within the Hollow Knight community. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit. The recipe's publication date: April 2, 2024.
The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Fans now believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the tweet and cake image.
The speculation continues. Fans are analyzing Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, with one compelling theory suggesting the "wr" could be part of a larger word, possibly referencing a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. His new name, "little bomey," adds another layer of mystery, possibly referencing a Southern Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location.
It's crucial to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement listed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms. Six years later, however, the situation is less clear. Could Nintendo have secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps as a timed exclusive? Or is this simply overzealous speculation from eager fans?
We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, let's review the announcements from Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
