The excitement surrounding a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has surged once again following the launch of Square Enix's official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. Marking the game's original release date of July 7, 2000, the site celebrates this milestone and hints at upcoming projects, including merchandise and collaborations. This announcement has fueled speculation among fans that a long-awaited remake could soon be revealed.

The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed, especially with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct scheduled for April 2. Some enthusiasts are hopeful that Square Enix might seize this opportunity to announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the new console. However, the website's mention of "various projects" leaves room for interpretation, stirring excitement and speculation alike.

Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, shed some light on the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9. He pointed out the game's extensive content, suggesting that a remake might not fit into a single title. Yoshi-P hinted at a possible approach similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is being released in parts as a planned trilogy.

Adding fuel to the speculation, earlier in 2024, Yoshi-P announced Final Fantasy 9-themed content for the Collector’s Edition and Digital Collector’s Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. This includes the iconic Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders offering a wind-up Zidane minion. During a PAX East event, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at more Final Fantasy 9 connections, leaving fans intrigued but without concrete details.

Rumors about a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been circulating since a 2021 Nvidia leak, which listed the game among other unannounced titles. Although Nvidia confirmed the leak's authenticity, the information could be outdated. The list included several Square Enix games that have since been released or announced, such as the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC. Yet, both Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics, also mentioned in the leak, remain unconfirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reported to be in development in June 2021, but no updates have emerged since.
