Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is generating significant excitement. Drawing inspiration from classic JRPGs, Final Fantasy, and Persona, the game blends turn-based combat with real-time elements. The Belle Epoque-inspired setting and unique gameplay mechanics are already turning heads.
The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the influences behind Expedition 33. He cited a desire for a high-fidelity turn-based RPG as the driving force, pointing to Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler as stylistic inspirations. While acknowledging the Persona influence, Broche emphasized the stronger impact of the Final Fantasy series, particularly Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X, on the game's core mechanics. He stressed that Expedition 33 isn't a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal tastes cultivated by playing these classics. The game's dynamic camera movements and menus, however, do owe a debt to Persona's design.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features a unique combat system where players input turn-based commands but must also react in real-time to enemy attacks. This innovative approach echoes the strategic depth found in Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars. The game also boasts an open world with environmental puzzles and unique traversal abilities, allowing players to switch between party members freely. Broche expressed a desire for players to experiment with different character builds and combinations, hinting at a high degree of player agency.
The development team aims to create a game with the lasting impact of the classic titles that inspired it. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
