CD Projekt Red has announced that Ciri will take center stage in The Witcher 4, marking a significant and logical shift in the series' narrative. Executive producer Malgorzata Mitrega explained that this transition from Geralt to Ciri is driven by both the evolution of the game series and the broader context of Andrzej Sapkowski's original works.
Mitrega highlighted that Geralt's arc reached its conclusion in The Witcher 3, setting the stage for Ciri's emergence. With her well-developed character from both the books and previous games, Ciri offers a wealth of creative opportunities due to her depth and complexity. Director Sebastian Kalemba added that Ciri's younger age allows for greater player influence over her development, a flexibility not possible with the more established Geralt.
The idea of shifting the protagonist to Ciri has been in discussion for nearly a decade, underscoring CD Projekt Red's long-term vision of her as Geralt's successor. Kalemba also noted that the new challenges and perspectives Ciri will face will pave the way for an equally epic new saga.
Doug Cockle, the voice actor behind Geralt, endorsed the decision, pointing out Ciri's vast potential as a lead character. While Geralt will still appear in The Witcher 4, he will no longer be the central figure, thereby emphasizing the fresh narrative perspective that Ciri brings to the forefront.
