Marvel Rivals Players Risk Bans

Summary

  • NetEase Games has warned Marvel Rivals players that modding the game could lead to permanent account bans, as it violates the terms of service.
  • Season 1 introduced a new anti-modding measure, but modders quickly found ways to bypass it.
  • It's unclear if any bans have been issued yet for modding Marvel Rivals.

NetEase Games, the developer and publisher behind the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players: continue modding the game at your own peril. The company has made it clear that any modifications, whether they are cosmetic hero mods or gameplay-enhancing add-ons, are in direct violation of Marvel Rivals' terms of service and could result in a permanent ban.

This announcement follows the launch of Season 1, which not only brought balance changes with Hero buffs and nerfs but also introduced two new characters from the Fantastic Four—Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic. The other two members, Human Torch and The Thing, are set to join the roster in upcoming updates. Since its debut in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has captured the hearts of both Marvel Comics enthusiasts and team shooter fans alike, earning a nomination for Online Game of the Year at the 2025 DICE Awards, set to be broadcast from Las Vegas on February 13.

Despite NetEase Games' efforts to curb modding in Season 1, some users have managed to find workarounds. A notable example is an add-on available on Nexus Mods, reported by IGN, which circumvents the anti-modding measure that checks for altered game assets. The mod's creator, Prafit, warned users that downloading the mod comes with risks, including potential bans, and recommended it only for those with high-end PCs. Following Prafit's release, another mod surfaced on social media, transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece, due to their similar stretching abilities. This mod, crafted by Ercuallo, was showcased in a video by RivalsLeaks on Twitter.

Marvel Rivals Warns Users to Stop Modding or Risk Bans

While it remains unclear whether NetEase Games has issued any explicit bans for modding, the company has firmly stated that such actions are against the game's terms of service. Some mods, like one featuring US President-elect Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods, but Prafit's Season 1 workaround remains available, with over 500 downloads noted at the time of this writing.

Marvel Rivals has also faced issues with false bans since its launch, but the risks associated with modding have been clearly communicated. The gaming community is now watching to see how NetEase Games will handle the ongoing situation.
