Digital Revolutionizing Devarattam: A Mobile App Tribute
This application, developed as part of my "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, honors the legacy of Devarattam. Kalaimamani M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimani M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti—recipients of the KALAIMAMANI, KALAIMANI, and USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN YUVA PURASKAR awards, respectively—have significantly contributed to Devarattam's preservation. This app is dedicated to these esteemed individuals, my mentor E. Rajakamulu, and the cherished legends of Devarattam.
The primary goal of the Devarattam app is to promote awareness of this traditional Tamil Nadu folk dance and its distinguished awardees. The app features detailed information about Devarattam and its prominent figures.
Devarattam, a vibrant folk dance, has been performed for generations by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community. While the dance incorporates 32 to 72 steps, 32 form the fundamental sequence, with variations built upon this foundation. Performers gracefully execute these steps, each holding a kerchief and wearing anklets (salangai), accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the Deva Thunthumi musical instrument.
