Virtua Fighter Returns with Stunning Gameplay Reveal

Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled

Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades. Development is being spearheaded by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Yakuza series.

The newly released footage, shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style. While not actual gameplay, the in-engine demonstration showcases a visually polished combat sequence featuring Akira, the franchise's iconic character, in updated attire. The meticulously choreographed fight suggests a cinematic approach, more akin to a martial arts film than a typical fighting game recording. This new direction, coupled with recent releases from other major fighting game franchises, positions the 2020s as a golden age for the genre.

A Shift in Visual Style

This new Virtua Fighter departs from the series' earlier, stylized polygonal aesthetic. The in-engine graphics point towards a more realistic visual style, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. Akira's appearance showcases this evolution, sporting new outfits that deviate from his classic look.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development alongside their work on Sega's Project Century. Details about the new Virtua Fighter remain scarce, but Sega's commitment to the franchise's revival is evident, as highlighted by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's declaration at the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The studio's continued releases of promotional material further solidify this commitment. The game promises to be a completely new entry in the series, offering fans a fresh and exciting experience.
