Sega Revives Ecco IP With Trademark
Ecco The Dolphin Returns
Exciting news for fans of classic video games: Sega has reignited interest in the beloved Ecco the Dolphin series by filing trademarks for both Ecco and Ecco the Dolphin in late December 2024. This move, reported by Gematsu and made public recently, has sparked widespread speculation about a possible revival of the franchise, dormant for over two decades.
First introduced in 1992 by Hungarian developer Appaloosa Interactive (formerly Novotrade International) and published by Sega, the Ecco the Dolphin series centers on the adventures of Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin tasked with thwarting extraterrestrial alien threats and saving the planet. The series saw four sequels released up until the year 2000. Notably, a planned follow-up to the 2000 game, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, titled Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe, was unfortunately canceled due to the decline and eventual discontinuation of the Sega Dreamcast.
Today, Sega continues to thrive as a prominent game developer and publisher, whereas Appaloosa Interactive ceased operations in the mid-2000s. However, the legacy of Ecco lives on through its creators, such as Ed Annunziata, who developed Space War Arena in 2019 and expressed his ongoing hope for an Ecco sequel in a 2019 interview with NintendoLife, stating, "One thing I can say is in the future, people are playing this game. I never give up!"
As of now, there are no further concrete updates on the future of Ecco the Dolphin, but the gaming community remains on high alert for more news. Given Sega's recent track record of reviving classic IPs and developing new projects, including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter, Project Century, and an "RPG-like" Virtua Fighter, the potential for an Ecco comeback seems promising. Stay tuned for more developments on this exciting possibility.
