Housemarque's next title, Saros, a successor to the acclaimed 2022 roguelite shooter Returnal, has been unveiled. Starring Rahul Kohli, Saros is slated for a 2026 release on PlayStation 5, with enhanced features for the PS5 Pro.
Unveiled during the recent PlayStation State of Play, Saros bears the unmistakable Housemarque signature. Players take on the role of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer investigating a perilous, ever-changing planet shrouded in an eclipse and menaced by a formidable entity. The game's atmosphere strongly echoes Returnal. The tagline "come back stronger" and the fiery spectacle hint at the characteristic roguelike elements and bullet-hell action that are Housemarque trademarks.
Creative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's signature gameplay-focused design. While a new single-player IP, it builds upon the third-person action established in Returnal.
However, significant gameplay differences exist between Saros and Returnal. As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Louden highlighted the introduction of permanent resources and progression. While the game world shifts upon player death, players will retain and upgrade their weaponry and equipment permanently.
Further details, including an extended gameplay showcase, are promised later this year.
