Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist

The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades in both art style and core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. While a release date remains unconfirmed, a free Steam demo offers a sneak peek at this intriguing title, slated for PC release in early 2025.

The popularity of the roguelike genre continues to surge, with developers constantly innovating. Rogue Loops joins a diverse range of games, from action-packed titles like Returnal to classic dungeon crawlers such as Hades and its currently-in-development sequel.

Rogue Loops clearly draws inspiration from Hades, featuring a repeatedly explored dungeon with randomized loot and ability upgrades presented from a top-down perspective. Its Steam trailer and demo highlight this similarity, but Rogue Loops also incorporates a distinctive gameplay element: ability upgrades come with significant drawbacks, significantly impacting subsequent gameplay.

This mechanic echoes the Chaos Gates in Hades, which offer powerful upgrades at the cost of temporary negative effects. In Rogue Loops, these "curses" are more pronounced and persistent, potentially lasting the entire playthrough, adding a strategic layer to decision-making.

The game's narrative centers on a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five distinct dungeon floors, battling unique enemies and bosses. Each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, allowing for diverse character builds leveraging both beneficial and detrimental effects.
