Rockstar's latest release, Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, hit Steam on March 4th, but it hasn't been the smooth ride fans hoped for. Despite offering new features and upgrades previously exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions, the game has garnered a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam, with just 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive.
This rating starkly contrasts with the original GTA 5 on Steam, which, although unlisted now at Rockstar's request, holds a 'very positive' user review rating. Interestingly, GTA 5 Enhanced stands as the least favorably reviewed GTA title on Steam, with Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition trailing behind at 66% positive reviews.
The GTA 5 Enhanced version offers a free upgrade to PC players, including access to Hao’s Special Works for the latest vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, GTA+ Membership purchase options, and enhanced graphics and loading times. However, the process of migrating existing accounts has proven problematic, fueling much of the negative feedback.
Frustrated users have reported issues with account migration, with one player expressing their discontent by saying, “‘The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,’ If you think I'm throwing away nearly 700 hours of gameplay on one character so that you can make a few more bucks off me, then you can lick my anal orifice clean. This is an objective downgrade from the ‘old’ version. Gonna pretend this was never released and continue to enjoy Legacy version until the new game comes out when I'm 60.”
Another review highlighted the arbitrary nature of the migration process and the lack of support, stating, “I'm leaving a negative review mainly due to Rockstar deciding that some accounts should arbitrarily not be able to migrate, and if you ask for help from support, they just say they can't do anything about it.”
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced remains a popular title on Steam, reaching a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 since its launch. However, these issues have raised concerns among PC gamers about the future release of Grand Theft Auto 6, set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall of 2025. A former Rockstar developer urged PC gamers to give the studio the “benefit of the doubt” regarding the delayed PC launch.
In related news, Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, has taken legal action against PlayerAuctions, claiming it hosts unauthorized GTA 5 content. Additionally, Rockstar has acquired Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition developer Video Games Deluxe, renaming it Rockstar Australia.
