Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an incubation project, leading to layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned the project's cancellation and their subsequent job search.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced incubation project, which was a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). This project was developed by a team that previously worked on another canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year saw the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. Nearly a year later, EA laid off 670 employees across the company and canceled several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, affecting around two dozen workers at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone further restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and more layoffs occurring.
IGN has sought a statement from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
