Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire Cars

Author: Layla Jan 23,2025

In the sprawling world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details how to hotwire cars in Project Zomboid.

Hotwiring is simpler than it seems, often just a few button presses away. However, prerequisites exist. While not requiring a top-tier character build, meeting these requirements is crucial before attempting vehicle theft.

Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid

Successfully hotwiring allows driving as long as fuel and vehicle condition permit, even without the correct keys. Prerequisites are Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.

How to Hotwire a Car:

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Select "Hotwire" and wait.

After fulfilling the prerequisites, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. Hotwiring is automated; once complete, press W to start the engine. Note: Fuel is not guaranteed, so acquiring gasoline beforehand is advisable.

Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills:

For non-Burglar characters, skill levels increase through specific in-game actions:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.

Books and magazines found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves also provide skill boosts. Project Zomboid server admins can directly grant skill XP using the "/addxp" command (syntax displayed in the chat box). A screwdriver or appropriate tool is necessary for dismantling/installation. Vehicle parts are removed by right-clicking and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics."
