Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been captivated by its stunning card art for months, but recent discoveries have revealed hidden details that tie some of its monsters directly to the iconic Game Boy games. The excitement began over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win pointed out that the Spearow card features subtle landmarks reminiscent of the Pokémon world. This Normal/Flying type Pokémon is depicted amidst grass, a fence, trees, and notably, two buildings. Asch_win identified the purple and yellow building in the background as the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Adjacent to Celadon City lies Route 16 in the Kanto region, known for its fenced-in grassy area where players can encounter Spearow.

It's clear that developers Creatures Inc. and DeNA have intentionally crafted these cards to pay homage to the games that propelled Pokémon to global fame. The fun doesn't stop with Spearow; Reddit user jteede discovered further connections to early Pokémon titles. These include a full-art Diglett card set just east of Vermillion City, a Haunter card next to the eerie Lavender Town tower, and more. Asch_win even used a magnifying glass to uncover references to specific locations in Pokémon history on Supporter cards.
While most card illustrations depict Pokémon in fantastical, dreamlike settings seemingly detached from the main lore, some cards, like a certain Pikachu variant, can be found in the real-world collection. Others, exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, hold these cleverly hidden Easter Eggs that are thrilling the community.
Over the weekend, the Pokémon TCG Pocket community has been meticulously examining other cards for more references. Notable finds include the S.S. Anne cruise liner subtly featured on a Gyarados full art card, and a series of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that together narrate a story set near the seaside Snorlax location from FireRed and LeafGreen.

Since its launch for mobile gaming fans in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has seen only one additional booster expansion set, Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available. More expansions are anticipated, and additional cards continue to be introduced through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA release more cards spanning the series' extensive history, players are encouraged to stay vigilant for more nostalgic references.
In the meantime, you can learn more about the current Wonder Pick event, spotlighting Charmander and Squirtle. Also, delve into why the developers are being coy about whether pack choice matters.
