Palworld developer Pocketpair is gearing up for a major cross-play update, slated for late March 2025. A recent X/Twitter post confirmed this update will introduce cross-platform multiplayer and world transfer for Pals. While details are scarce beyond a promotional image depicting a Palworld battle, Pocketpair's Communications Director and Publishing Manager, John 'Bucky' Buckley, hinted at "a few little surprises" included in the March update.
This is exciting news for the 32 million players who've joined Palworld since its January 2024 early access launch. Pocketpair has outlined an ambitious 2025 content roadmap, including the cross-play update, a concluding scenario, and additional content for this immensely popular creature-catching survival game.
Palworld's initial launch was a phenomenal success, debuting on Steam at $30 and simultaneously on Xbox and PC Game Pass. This resulted in record-breaking sales and concurrent player numbers, a success so significant that Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe stated the studio was initially overwhelmed by the game's profitability. Capitalizing on this momentum, Pocketpair swiftly partnered with Sony to establish Palworld Entertainment, a new venture focused on expanding the IP and bringing the game to PS5.
However, the studio faces a legal challenge from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, who allege Palworld infringes on multiple patent rights and are seeking an injunction and damages. Pocketpair has responded by identifying the patents in question and adjusting the Pal summoning mechanics within the game. The developer has publicly committed to defending its position in court, stating, “We will continue to assert our position in this case through future legal proceedings.”
