How Big is the Nintendo Switch 2?

Author: Harper Apr 17,2025

The initial scenes of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal a console that's noticeably larger than its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section expands and transforms into the new model. This substantial increase in size suggests that Nintendo is shifting further from the compact handhelds of its past, aligning more closely with the era of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.

While Nintendo has not disclosed exact dimensions for the Switch 2, we can estimate its size using the trailer and insights from a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to interact with a Switch 2 mock-up created by peripheral designer Genki. Although its accuracy was unconfirmed at the time, the trailer showcased a console that closely matches the Genki design, suggesting our measurements from CES are likely close to the final product's dimensions.

So, let's dive into the estimated size of the Switch 2.

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**, measured diagonally across the display area, excluding bezels. This matches earlier rumors from 2024. We anticipate the screen to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If accurate, this represents a 30% increase in diagonal screen size compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display, and a **66% increase in total screen area**. A larger screen can enhance the gaming experience, assuming the display technology remains high-quality.

In comparison to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen will be 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

With the rise of portable PCs like the Steam Deck, competition has intensified. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED feature 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens respectively, both larger than the current Switch models. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen would still surpass the Steam Deck OLED's, being 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in total area.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

Given the larger screen, the console itself is naturally bigger. While the original Switch barely fits in most pockets, the Switch 2 will likely require cargo pants or a bag for portability.

Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES indicate that the Switch 2 is approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**, including Joy-Cons. The original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall, making the Switch 2 **about 25% larger** overall.

This also means the Switch 2 is around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). Although we couldn't measure the depth precisely, it appears similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The transformation animation in the trailer suggests that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons maintain a similar width to the original but are taller. Based on our analysis, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be about 32mm wide and 115mm tall**—the same width as the original, excluding the slot system, but 13mm taller. If accurate, the new Joy-Cons are **approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**, which is about **31% larger than the original Switch** screen unit.

This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen with approximately 11mm bezels on either side and 8mm bezels along the top and bottom, slimmer on the sides than the original but similar at the top and bottom.

Keep in mind that these are estimates, and the official dimensions may differ. However, our experience with the Genki mock-up gives us confidence that we're close to the mark. We anticipate a console that's about 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get our hands on it later this year.
