Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features Confirmed in New Patent

The Nintendo Switch 2 may look familiar at first glance, but Nintendo’s biggest innovations appear to be in its redesigned Joy-Cons, as revealed by recently surfaced patents.

While official confirmation from Nintendo is still pending, reports suggest the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will employ magnetic attachment and even function as computer mice. These claims are strongly supported by newly-published Nintendo patents detailing both magnetic docking and mouse-like capabilities.

The patent describes the controller as “detachably mounted to a body device with a recess, containing a first magnet and a second magnet at the recess bottom, capable of game processing.”

PlayThe patent further specifies two buttons required for Joy-Con detachment: “The first and second buttons are positioned longitudinally on the protrusion’s top surface, pressed by the user. The first button is magnetically attracted to the first magnet; the second button to the second magnet.”

Illustrations within the patent showcase the Joy-Cons used as a mouse, held rail-side down, with shoulder buttons acting as mouse clicks. R1 and R2 buttons likely function as left and right clicks respectively, with joystick manipulation potentially providing scrolling functionality.

These illustrations also depict dual mouse configurations or a setup where one Joy-Con acts as a mouse and the other as a standard controller.

Magnetic Joy-Con attachment was among the earliest Switch 2 leaks. The mouse functionality emerged later, though a January teaser subtly hinted at this feature, showcasing Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
