Minecraft Creator Hints at "Minecraft 2"

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited speculation about a potential "Minecraft 2" in a recent social media poll. The January 1st poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed Notch is developing a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with a first-person dungeon crawler style (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he also included the option of creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.

The poll overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired sequel, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. This isn't surprising, given Minecraft's enduring popularity with millions of daily players worldwide.

Notch subsequently confirmed his seriousness about the poll results, essentially declaring he'd "basically announced Minecraft 2." He expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his creative passion and acknowledged the strong player desire for a new Minecraft-like experience. He emphasized that while the order of his projects remains flexible, he's committed to developing a new game.

It's crucial to note that Notch sold Minecraft's IP and Mojang Studios (the developer) to Microsoft in 2014. This means he cannot directly use the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. However, Notch assured fans that any Minecraft-inspired project would avoid infringing on Mojang's current work, expressing respect for their continued development and Microsoft's stewardship.

Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging that such projects often deviate from initial expectations. Despite these concerns, he's leaning towards the Minecraft sequel due to strong player interest and potential financial success.

While awaiting Notch's potential "Minecraft sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
