Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors
Despite reports suggesting otherwise, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously told Esquire that his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains firm. Evans himself reiterated his retirement to Esquire, stating that these rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame and that he's chosen to ignore them.
While Evans has appeared in the MCU indirectly—reprising his Fox character Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine—this was a smaller, comedic role, unlike his central Captain America arc.
The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors' portrayal of Kang, intended as the MCU's next major antagonist, has left the franchise in a state of flux.
Marvel Studios has since announced Doctor Doom as the new primary villain, played by Robert Downey Jr., sparking speculation about the return of other original Avengers. However, no other such returns have been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch, the Doctor Strange actor, confirmed his absence from Avengers: Doomsday but hinted at a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
