Marvel Rivals players are risking account bans by continuing to use mods, even after a Season 1 crackdown. Since the game's successful December launch, players have created custom skins using mods, despite warnings. Popular examples include transforming Iron Man into Dragon Ball's Vegeta, Mantis into a goth character, and even Jeff the Land Shark into Chainsaw Man's Pochita.
Last week's Season 1 update, featuring the Fantastic Four, included a secret mod restriction: asset hash checking. Developer NetEase reiterated their terms of service, which prohibit mods, cheats, bots, hacks, and unauthorized third-party software, warning players of potential bans.
However, a workaround is now circulating online, requiring more steps but remaining accessible to many PC players. Modder Prafit, who shared a workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users about the risk of bans, noting that while NetEase hasn't issued permanent bans yet, the possibility remains.
New mods utilizing the Fantastic Four characters have emerged, such as Ercuallo's mod transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy—downloaded over 5,000 times in just two days.
Whether NetEase will follow through on its ban threats remains to be seen. No confirmed bans for mod usage have been reported, but the workaround's spread might trigger further action.
NetEase's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, gameplay balance issues, and potential performance impacts. Prafit even noted that their workaround is best suited for high-performance PCs.
