What Are Legendary Sumi-E in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Legendary Sumi-E are unique ancient paintings of animals that Naoe or Yasuke can create while exploring the wilds. When you're close to one, a painting icon will appear on your compass and map. To capture these, you need to crouch and sneak up on the animal. Once you're near, hold L2/LT to complete the painting. However, unlike regular Sumi-E, legendary ones don't show up on the map, making them trickier to find. There are five legendary Sumi-E in the game, and their availability depends on the season.

Legendary Tanuki – Summer, Daytime

To find the Legendary Tanuki Sumi-E, head to the Omi region during summer and daytime. Navigate to the Shimmering Fields, specifically the Shigaraki Hamlet. Once there, you'll see Tanuki statues around you. Follow the path upwards to a clearing where you'll find the legendary Tanuki. Approach carefully and complete the drawing.

Legendary Grey Heron – Winter, Daytime

The Grey Heron can be found in Wakasa, in the Lake Suigetsu area, during winter and daytime. Head to the cluster of islands west of Lake Suigetsu. Approach the area on foot to avoid startling the heron. Locate the Sumi-E opportunity, crouch, and slowly move in to complete the painting.

Legendary Macaque – All Seasons, Nighttime

Travel to the Yamashiro region and find the Little Leaf Glade sub-region. Locate the Sarumaru Shrine near the mountains. Wait for nighttime, then climb the stairs to the top where you'll find the three wise monkeys. Capture them in your Sumi-E.

Legendary Silver Fox – Autumn, Nighttime

The legendary Silver Fox Sumi-E is available at night during Autumn in the Kii region, specifically the Nakahechi Route sub-region. At the Kamimisu Inari Shrine, where fox statues are present, you'll find the fox at the cliff's edge. Approach and draw it to add to your collection.

Legendary Deer – Spring, Nighttime

Head to the Yamato region and the Yoshino sub-region. The nearest fast-travel point is the Mountain Blossom Temple to the west. Follow the path east to reach the Sakura Meadows. Climb the slopes to the clearing at the top where you'll find the legendary Deer. Capture it in your Sumi-E.

Keep in mind that even if you're in the right place at the right time, the animals might not always spawn. If this happens, try fast-traveling to a nearby location and returning to see if they appear. With persistence, you'll complete your collection and earn the A Rare Occurrence trophy and achievement.
