European Console Market Experiences Sales Dip in 2024

The European video game console market faced significant challenges in 2024, experiencing a notable decline in sales. This downturn, impacting major players like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, is attributed to market saturation and a shortage of new console releases.

The only significant new release from a major console manufacturer was the PlayStation 5 Pro, a high-performance iteration of the existing PS5. Despite its launch, overall console sales still plummeted. Data from the Video Games Chronicle reveals a substantial 21% decrease in total console sales compared to 2023. Even PlayStation, which fared best among the major brands, saw a 20% drop in sales. The Nintendo Switch experienced a 15% decline, while Xbox Series X/S sales suffered a dramatic 48% decrease. This sharp drop is largely attributed to the market's maturity, with the original PS5 and Xbox Series consoles launching in 2020 and the Nintendo Switch in 2017. Further evidence of market stagnation is seen in the US, where the Meta Quest 3S outsold all major gaming consoles in 2024 on Amazon.

Shifting Sales Trends: Digital Dominates

While console sales faltered, the overall European gaming market showed a modest 1% increase in 2024, with 188.1 million PC and console games sold. This growth, however, is significantly lower than anticipated. The data highlights a clear shift towards digital distribution, with digital game sales surging 15% to 131.6 million units, while physical sales plummeted 22% to 56.5 million units.

Anticipation for 2025

The outlook for 2025 is more optimistic, with the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 expected to boost sales considerably.
