The entire Annapurna Interactive team, the video game division of Annapurna Pictures, has resigned following a dispute with Megan Ellison. This mass exodus leaves the future of the publisher uncertain.
Annapurna Interactive's Staff Resignation After Failed Negotiations
The publisher behind successful titles like Stray and What Remains of Edith Finch is facing a significant upheaval. Over 20 employees, including the entire staff, resigned after negotiations to establish Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity failed. Former president Nathan Gary led the effort, and the entire team followed suit after the breakdown in talks.
According to Bloomberg, Gary stated that all 25 team members resigned collectively, emphasizing the difficult nature of the decision. Annapurna Pictures' Ellison assured partners of continued support for existing projects and a commitment to interactive entertainment, aiming for a more integrated approach across various media.
This mass resignation has significant consequences. Indie developers who collaborated with Annapurna are now seeking clarification on the future of their partnerships and contract fulfillment.
Remedy Entertainment, whose Control 2 received partial funding from Annapurna Interactive, clarified that their agreement is with Annapurna Pictures, and they are self-publishing Control 2. Communications director Thomas Puha addressed fan concerns on Twitter (X).
Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as the new president. Sources indicate Sanchez has assured partners of contract adherence and staff replacement. This follows a recent company restructuring, including the departure of Gary, Deborah Mars, and Nathan Vella. The company's commitment to its existing projects remains to be seen.
